Despite several remedial measures, including long-term training camps at the State academy, batting continues to be the achills’ heel of the Orissa senior cricket team. This was proved true when the team, led by former Test opener Shiv Sundar Das, was bundled out for 192 on the second day of their Ranji Trophy (Group-A) Super League match against Gujarat at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium in Ahmedabad today.
Orissa’s poor batting helped host Gujarat take a first innings lead of 78 runs. The home side then started their second innings on cautious note and finished the day at five for no loss. Niranjan Behera waged a lone battle for Orissa, hitting a belligerent 78 (195 balls, 9x4). He rescued Orissa from dire straits (45 for four wickets) by putting up 50 runs for the fifth wicket with Rakesh Mohanty.
Top order batsmen let Orissa down with skipper Das and former skipper Pravanjan Mullick both falling for ducks, while Subit Biswal and Paresh Patel failing to reach double figures.
Earlier, resuming their first innings at the overnight score 237 for seven, Gujarat added 33 runs before folding up for 270. Left-arm spinner Dhiraj Singh was the most successful Orissa bowler with four wickets, while former India speedster Debasis Mohanty scalped three.
